Dec. 25--Firefighters did their best to save some Christmas cheer after flames erupted in a Whitman triple-decker Monday night.
Shortly after 8 p.m., Whitman firefighters responded to the Linden Avenue home to find flames billowing from its second-story windows. They contained the fire to the second floor, but all three families in the home were displaced.
There was, however, a silver lining.
No one was injured in the fire and firefighters were able to rescue wrapped Christmas gifts from the apartments, Whitman Fire Chief Timothy J. Grenno said in a statement.
"Firefighters worked quickly to limit the damage, and I am very proud that we were able to save a bit of Christmas for these families who have been put out of their homes tonight," Grenno said.
The residents of the three units are reported to be staying with relatives. None of them were home during the fire.
Grenno estimated the damage to the building at about $100,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
