A North Carolina who was struck by a car while at a fire scene last week remains in critical condition.

Pamlico County firefighter Maegan Speciale, 20, was helping to put out a fire at around 7 p.m. March 5 in Beaufort County when the accident happened, WITN-TV reports. She was setting a roadblock for traffic when a driver swerved to avoid a fire apparatus and struck Speciale, who tried to get out of the vehicle's path.

Pamlico County Fire Marshal Chris Murray told WITN that firefighters have been standing watch at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where Speciale is in the critical care unit. A Go FundMe campaign has been created to help her pay for hospital bills, and as of Wednesday afternoon, it has more than $7,500 of its $10,000 goal.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol told WITN that no charges have been filed stemming from the incident.

Speciale is the granddaughter of State Rep. Michael Speciale, of Craven County, the news outlet added.
