Along with pulling the two occupants from the Shelton home early Wednesday, firefighters also were able to keep the residential blaze contained to a single room.

First responders rescued two people who were trapped in a burning house in Shelton early Wednesday.

Police and firefighters were called to the home at 74 High St. about 2:20 a.m., and when they arrived they learned that two occupants were trapped, fire officials said. Officers rescued one person from the front hallway, and firefighters removed a second from a first-floor bedroom. The second person was unresponsive.

Both residents were taken to Bridgeport Hospital. Three police officers were taken to Griffin Hospital in Derby to be checked, fire officials said.

Firefighters put out the fire, which only burned in one room.
