MA Crews Battle Massive Fire at Condo Complex

A roaring fire at a condominium complex on Wednesday night in Boxboro went to four alarms, and firefighters had to draw water from nearby ponds with no hydrant access.

Firefighters faced a difficult firefight with no hydrant access Wednesday night in Boxboro while flames consumed a condominium complex.

CBS Boston reports that the fire at the Leverett House condos broke out just after 5 pm and eventually went to four alarms, with crews from fire departments in the surrounding communities assisting the Boxboro Fire Department.

Boxboro does not have a municipal water system, meaning no fire hydrants, so firefighters set up portable tanks and drew water supply from nearby ponds.

"Actually the challenging part was evacuating people, before we even got water, was getting people out of the building," Boxboro Fire Chief Paul Fillebrown told CBS Boston. "Because people didn’t want to leave."

The building, which contained two dozen condo units, is considered a total loss and the state Fire Marshal is investigating.
