AK Firefighter Injured in Fatal Apartment Fire

Anchorage firefighters pulled an unconscious resident from the burning apartment complex, and 21 units worked for over an hour to extinguish the two-alarm fire.

An Alaska firefighter was injured in a fatal two-alarm apartment building fire Monday.

The fire broke out at about 7:45 p.m. at a complex in Anchorage's Campbell Park neighborhood, according to the fire department. Crews were told that at least one person was trapped inside the burning building, and they encountered heavy smoke and flames from the 14-unit complex.

While crews worked to put out the fire, firefighters went inside to rescue the trapped individual. An unconscious resident was found and pulled from the building.

"Unfortunately, the resident was beyond help and died from their injuries," the department stated.

During the call, a firefighter suffered minor injuries. It's not clear if the firefighter was taken to the hospital.

A second alarm was called, and 21 units responded to the fire. Crews worked for more than an hour to finally get the flames under control.

The cause of the fire is udner investigation.
