CLEVELAND, Ohio — An 8-year-old boy died and a firefighter was injured in a house fire early Wednesday morning on the East Side.
Information released by the fire department says the firefighter was injured during early efforts to rescue people from the burning home on East 68th Street, south of Harvard Avenue in the Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood. The firefighter was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center.
Cleveland Fire Chief Angelo Calvillo tells WEWS Channel 5 that firefighters “are hurting tonight” because of the young boy’s death.
“That child was one of a twin, so it’s a tough situation and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family,” Calvillo said.
Two adults and three children were able to escape the fire. Firefighters tell WEWS that smoke detectors in the home were able to alert people inside.
