Firefighters in West Hazleton battled a wind-driven fire in two retail occupancies that started on the roof and quickly spread Monday evening.
Fire crews were called to Weis Market after a nearby worker noticed a fire at the store and crews found a small fire burning between multiple roofs lines.
A short time later, the wind changed direction causing the fire to rapidly increase in size and spread across the building, according to a report by WFMZ-TV.
Fire crews evacuated the roof and set up defensive operations as surrounding departments arrived to assist with the incident.
As the fire spread from the grocery to the adjacent pet store, firefighters and store staff were able to move all animals to safety.
It took a couple hours to control the fire with both stores suffering significant damage.
One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation.
