NY Airport to Change Fire Protection Provider

Feb. 2, 2022
The Hancock International Airport will change their fire protection from the Syracuse Fire Department to the Air National Guard in a cost savings measure.

The Syracuse Fire Department will no longer be providing services to the Hancock International Airport effective July 1.

The Air National Guard 174th Attack Wing was selected as the airport's new fire services provider. Currently, firefighters from Syracuse Fire Station 4 provide fire protection.

The Air National Guard has a staff of 27 firefighters and will increase staffing levels to 9 or 10 firefighters on-duty per shift, according to CNYCENTRAL.

The deal has been in the works for months according to the Syracuse Regional Airport Authority Executive Director Jason Terreri and said there will be no noticeable changes for the public.

"We pay the city right now about $3.5-4 million a year for our services and that cost will go away for the Airport," Terreri said. "he 174th, because they already have a fire station, we wont be paying them anything directly but they will no longer owe us $370,000 a year for the use of our air fields."

City officials said the Syracuse firefighters from Station 4 will be reassigned to other stations in the city.
