The suspect eluded police in the stolen ambulance before crashing and then stealing a Tanner Vol. Fire Co. truck.

An Alabama man has been charged with stealing an ambulance and a fire truck early Sunday.

WHNT reported an ambulance crew stopped along a highway after noticing a wrecked car. Tyrek Dequavyious Hayes, 30, was the only occupant.

Hayes got into the back of the ambulance where there was an EMT. The other crew member was entering the patient area, the station reported.

One of the EMTs was thrown out of the ambulance, while the other was trapped. The suspect got behind the wheel and took off on U.S. 31. The rig ran off the road, and nearly landed in a creek, according to reports.

He eluded the search, including a K-9, and made it back onto the highway where he took a fire truck owned by Tanner Vol. Fire Company.

During the pursuit, he reportedly drove the rig off road for nearly a quarter-mile before it crashed in a thicket. It was totaled in the wreck, deputies said.

He was charged with two counts of theft, kidnapping, eluding police and other offenses.
