Feb. 27, 2024
One resident jumped from the third floor after a Buffalo firefighter trying to put up a ladder was injured.

A 40-year-old man died after a house fire Sunday night that also left a firefighter and other residents injured.

The victim who was rescued by firefighters later died from a heart attack, Buffalo Fire Commissioner William Renaldo told WGRZ.

A Buffalo firefighter was burned while trying to place a ladder to assist the man trapped on the third floor. The victim then jumped, and suffered a broken pelvis.

"He (the firefighter) had taken a 24-foot ladder, which is the largest ladder that we have on one of our pumpers. And put it up to the garage on his own, to get to the top of the garage. He brought the ladder up onto the garage, and tried to use the ladder to get to the third floor from the roof of the garage or as close as he could," Renaldo explained, adding that that's when the firefighter suffered second-degree facial. burns.

Two other residents escaped on their own.
