Flames engulfed the tanker, which was carrying 8,500 gallons of fuel, and spread to a nearby creek following a collision along Highway 16 in Lincoln County.

Firefighters put out a fiery overturned tanker truck that spilled gallons of fuel on a North Carolina highway Tuesday.

The accident along Highway 16 in Lincoln County happened shortly after 1:30 p.m., WSOC-TV reports. Another vehicle struck the tanker, sending both vehicles off the road and killing in the crash.

Three hours following the crash the tanker, which was filled with 8,500 gallons of fuel, caught fire. Flames also spread to a nearby creek, which was filled with the spilled fuel.

Crews drilled holes in the tanker and then pumped the remaining fuel into another truck. They also spent hours cooling the crashed tanker in an effort to prevent a the vehicle from reigniting, WSOC added.
