New York City firefighters battled a four-alarm blaze in the Bronx the took one life and injured nine people while damaging various multiple-family homes.
FDNY fire crews responded to the fire on Valentine Avenue in the Fordham section of the Bronx arrived to a heavy smoke showing from the rear of multiple adjoining structures.
Firefighters received initial reports of multiple people trapped, the FDNY said that they were able to remove one person from inside where the fire began and another passed away, NBC 4 New York reported.
Heavy winds feed the flames and smoke making fire suppression operations more difficult.
Kareem Parker told NBC 4 New York, his mother and his grandmother were inside on the first floor when the fire broke out. He escaped by jumping out a rear window, while his mother made it out the front door. But his grandmother did not survive.
Four firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling the fatal blaze.
