Home Improvement Job Causes Blast, Leaving UT Couple Injured

April 12, 2023
Layton firefighters believe the acetone they were using was ignited by the furnace's igniter.

A home improvement project went awry leaving a young couple injured.

Shea and Brandon Kinsey were using acetone to stain their concrete basement when there was an explosion, KSL reported.

Despite his injuries, Brandon carried his wife of six months up the stairs. She suffered third-degree burns on over half her body while he also sustained extensive burns.

"Investigators are looking closer at the furnace that has no pilot light but instead uses an electronic igniter. The furnace room has more charring than anywhere else, indicating the point of origin,"  Layton Fire Battalion Chief Jason Cook said.
