Residents in Fairfield are seeing a new emergency vehicle around town these days -- an ambulance.
In 2022, Fairfield Fire and Rescue responded to 2,600 calls. 80% of those calls were EMS-related, ABC33 reported.
"It's really been a good thing for the city of Fairfield to have a BLS [basic life support] transport. It makes the citizens feel a little more secure. We still have to depend on other agencies to step in and help us from time to time," said Interim Chief Carlos Perry of Fairfield Fire and Rescue.
Since April 24, the two EMTs have responded to about a dozen calls. One of its first was a shooting at a local restaurant.
"We're fortunate that the ambulance was able to go along with the fire department, arrive on scene, have a great ETA, our other ambulance companies came to assist in any other area we may have needed them in, so it was a group and team effort," Perry told reporters.
"Time is of the essence. We're in a business of saving lives, and anything minor can turn into something major. Having that ambulance on the scene helps out tremendously...It gives us more sense of security."
