Firefighters were battling a three-alarm fire early Friday at a large industrial building in Elizabeth that has already led to a partial collapse.
The building in the 100 block of Trumball Street, which houses numerous businesses, caught fire around 5:30 a.m., according to a city spokeswoman. No one was believed to be inside when it started and there are no reports of injuries.
“It is currently a heavy fire and spreading, with some of the building already collapsed,” the spokeswoman said. A passerby spotted flames and called 911, the spokeswoman said.
News video from ABC-7 showed the building engulfed in fire and smoke as firefighters surrounded the structure, which is across from the Mills at Jersey Gardens mall and south of Newark Liberty International Airport.
City officials said the cause of the fire was not immediately known and is under investigation.
The building houses several business and warehouses, according to online records. ABC-7 reported the building is more than 100 years old and was once home to the Singer sewing factory.
