Burning oil tanks at a Rockville quarry created thick, dark smoke that was visible for miles Thursday afternoon.
Montgomery County firefighters kept their distance at first due to the hazardous materials involved. The fire involved hree stationary tanks including two liquid asphalt tanks and one used motor oil tank, WJLA reported.
“We hope that people treat it like a bad air quality day, We don’t know of any hazards, per se, but it is smoky,” said Pete Piringer, public information officer for Montgomery County Fire Rescue Services.
Firefighters monitored the air throughout the operation. Piringer urged residents to limit outdoor activiity.
