April 26, 2024
Intense training is underway at South Bend's River Rescue School.

Though their jurisdictions are as different as night and day, they are on the same mission together right now

Swift water rescue technicians from South Bend and the FDNY are training and honing their skills.

One of the scenarios involved rescuing two people trapped in a car in the water while another had a person on top of a vehicle, WNDU reported.

South Bend Fire’s River Rescue School has been in operation for 40 years and often hosts crews from out of state.

“This particular one is with the New York City Fire Department. They come here to learn advance so far our skills that they’re required to know for their special operations command group, which is includes rescue companies, squad companies, special operations companies that are within the city of New York and part of their New York City taskforce,” said Captain Brent VanBrauene, with the South Bend Fire Indiana River Rescue School.
