MA Worker Critically Injured in Fatal Garage Stairs Collapse

March 3, 2021
When Cambridge firefighters responded to the emergency at a city-owned parking structure, they discovered an interior collapse of a stairway.

One worker was killed and another was critically injured Wednesday after a stairwell collapsed at a Cambridge parking garage, officials said.

Emergency workers received a 9-1-1 call at 8:23 a.m. about a partial structure collapse inside the city-owned First Street parking garage, Cambridge Fire Chief Gerry Mahoney said.

Firefighters discovered an interior collapse of a stairway at the scene, Mahoney said.

"It was being disassembled because the stairway was being replaced," he said. "There has unfortunately been one fatality, and one other worker has been transported to an area hospital in critical condition."

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating.

The accident comes a week after two construction workers were killed at a site in Boston's Financial District.

Juan Carlos Figueroa Gutierrez, 33, and Jordan Romero, 27, were working on High Street when a truck hit them and knocked them into an excavated ditch.
