Propelled Spike Narrowly Misses CT Children

Two toddlers in the back seat of a car were nearly struck when a lawnmower picked up and propelled a 10-inch metal spike into the passing vehicle.

Two small children narrowly escaped serious injury when a metal spike was propelled into a car window in eastern Connecticut.

According to a Saturday press release from the Fairfield Fire-Rescue Department, the toddlers—aged 2 and 3—were restrained in car seats and spared life-threatening injuries when a commercial lawnmower's rotating blades picked up and propelled a ten-inch metal spike toward the passing vehicle.

The spike traveled roughly 20 feet before breaking through the rear passenger side window of the car, passing within inches of the faces of the children, according to the department. The spike then ricocheted of the interior glass on the driver's side and came to rest on the floor between the two children.

Both of the children were evaluated by Fairfield Fire-Rescue personnel along with medics from American Medical Response and were found to have suffered only minor injuries due to the shattered glass.

Lieutenant Robert Smith, commanding Engine 3, said “that in just a matter of inches an injury may have occurred resulting in a very tragic story.”
