Lakeville firefighters offered thanks to an anonymous woman who cared for a four-year-old girl riding in a car that crashed, seriously injuring the driver.

First responders in Lakeville offered thanks Monday to an unknown women who they say stopped to help a four-year-old girl riding in the backseat of a car that crashed off the side of Route 140, ejecting the driver.

Lakeville firefighters responded Monday around 4:30 p.m. to a car that had left highway and crashed into trees. The driver was tossed from the vehicle and suffered significant injuries, the department said, but a young girl riding with a seatbelt escaped serious harm.

A passing driver, firefighters said, stopped to help the victims before first responders could arrive.

“The unknown woman cared for and comforted the young child until ambulance crews took over care,” the Lakeville Fire Department said. “The woman was able to calm the upset child and even had her smiling and laughing.”

The woman’s identity is not known to the department.

Lakeville is northeast of Fall River. The fire department in nearby Freetown and the Massachusetts State Police also responded to the crash.
