Two firefighters injured during a diving emergency on Lake Norman, in which a fellow firefighter died, have returned to active duty.
Ben Godfrey and Derek Sigmon, firefighters and certified public safety divers with Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue, are in good condition, Chief Rick Davis said Thursday.
Fellow firefighter Capt. Bradley Long died during the June 6 search for the body of swimmer Isaiah Cruz, 29.
An investigation by local, state and federal agencies continues into what happened to the divers, Davis said.
Godfrey and Sigmon “continue to grieve the loss of their friend and co-worker,” Davis said in a statement issued by Catawba County Emergency Management. “The fire department is thankful for the community’s prayers and thoughts as the entire fire family is working through this loss.”
Davis asked that the media and public “continue to give everyone involved distance and allow them privacy.”
