LAWRENCE -- Good gear is the "life blood" of firefighters.
"If we don't have our gear, we can't do our jobs," said Fire Chief Brian Moriarty.
A city business leader, Charles Daher of Commonwealth Motors, has donated new metal racks for the central fire headquarters on Lowell Street which will help Lawrence firefighters store and protect their emergency gear.
Moriarty on Thursday described the new racks, which cost more than $15,000, as a "state of the art gear system."
"This will allow us to take care of our gear and keep our station cleaner," said Moriarty.
The new metal racks replace older wooden racks previously used by city firefighters.
Both Moriarty and Mayor Daniel Rivera recognized Daher, his son Charles Daher, and daughter Kimberly Daher-Millman, who are both sales managers for the Daher dealership companies, in a brief ceremony Thursday at central fire headquarters.
Daher, who grew up in Lawrence and has run his business in the city for decades, said he appreciates the work firefighters do.
"You guys are the ones who put your lives on the line for us ... We are glad to help," said Daher.
Rivera presented Daher with a certificate of appreciation from city, also thanking him for the "high quality business" and jobs he provides in the city.
The Daher family owns Chevrolet, Kia, Nissan, Honda and Volkswagen dealerships located on Commonwealth Drive and Marston Street.
