UK Union Balks at FFs Stripping to Skivvies Under Turnout Pants
The age-old question about what a firefighter is wearing under a kilt may now include turnout pants -- at least in some areas across the pond.
Stripping down to underwear 'prior to donning their fire kit,' is unacceptable and should be stopped immediately, Fire Brigades Union (FBU) officials told the BBC.
The union said this happened "in full sight of colleagues, and at times, the public."
They added that in May they contacted the Kent brigade’s chief fire officer, Ann Millington, in after concerns were raised via the union’s national women’s committee.
“She also appeared to defend the practice, stating that stripping down to underwear could prevent overheating,” union officials told The Guardian.
But, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) is balking at the claims firefighters are being forced to undress -- whether in the cab or at the scene.
"We let them decide what is most comfortable for them to do their job well," officials said.
"Wearing cotton workwear under PPE is standard practice in most fire services in the rest of the UK. Not only does this protect dignity, but it can also provide some additional protection, including from toxic contaminants in fire. It's embarrassing that this is having to be explained," said Riccardo la Torre, a national officer for the FBU.
