    A volunteer firefighter was struck and killed Sunday night as he left the firehouse in Salem.

    Gardner Lake Firefighter Willis Sands, 69, was pronounced dead at the scene, WTNH reported.

    State police said Sands was walking across the street to go home after an event at the firehouse when he was hit by a vehicle.

    The people in the vehicle were not hurt.
