The Lawrence Mill fire chief discovered one of his engines crashed and a veteran firefighter dead while leaving a fire early Monday.
Firefighter Tony Baumgartner, 71, was one of the founding members of the fire department.
The flag at the fire company is at half-staff in his memory, WBRC reported.
Baumgartner was returning from a fire when the crash occurred.
