The Billings firefighter was dragged after reaching into the car of an alleged drunken driver to try to stop him from driving through a coned-off work site.

A Montana firefighter was dragged for about 100 yards trying to stop a suspected drunken driver at a work site Tuesday.

According to Billings police, a 23-year-old man drove through traffic cones set up for power company crews repairing a transformer in the Billings Heights area, the Billings Gazette reports. As the driver was going through the area, a Billings firefighter reached into the driver-side window to stop the car, but the driver then accelerated.

For around 100 yards, the firefighter was dragged by the car until the driver stopped.

“Once he stopped the firefighters kept him there until officers arrived," Billings police Sgt. Brett Becker told the Gazette. "They did their preliminary DUI investigation at the scene and then took him to our DUI center."

The firefighter was treated at the scene and wasn't taken to the hospital. The fire department did not give details about the firefighter's injuries.

The driver, Eli Rindal, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and suspicion of criminal endangerment, according to the Gazette.
