Newport Firefighter Ryan Whaley took brotherhood to a whole different level.

A northern Kentucky firefighter took brotherhood in the fire service to a whole different level recently.

Newport Firefighter Ryan Whaley stepped up to help as most responders do. But, this time the person in need was a fellow firefighter.

Bob Hug had been struggling with kidney disease for more than a year, and was undergoing dialysis. He desperately needed a transplant.

Whaley was one of many firefighters and Hug's friends who got tested to see if they were a match.

When he learned he was, he decided to help out.

On its Facebook page, Newport IAFF Local 45 officials wrote: "This is one of the bravest acts of lifesaving which is only possible due to the selfless decision Brother Whaley made to donate his kidney to Brother Hug. This donation and transplant will transform lives and reshape the futures of these men and their families. This is what the fire service and fire family truly is all about. The bond and friendship we forge is everlasting."
