Longtime SC Fire Chief, 87, Stricken at Fire, Dies

Former Glendale Chief Robert E. Brown Sr. fell ill while pulling hose at a brush fire.

A veteran fire chief answered his final alarm Thursday -- a brush fire in Spartanburg.

While pulling hose, former Glendale Fire Chief Robert E. Brown Sr., 87, started feeling ill. He was transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a few hours later, WSPA reported. 

He led the department from 1976 until 2017, and spent years prior as a firefighter. He was inducted into the Spartanburg County Fire Chiefs Hall of Fame in 2000.

His family has a combined 185 years of volunteer service.
