After Nine Years, CA Reopens Fire Station

Aug. 30, 2022
The Walnut Creek station was closed in 2013 due to the recession.

After a nine-year hiatus, firefighters have returned to Station 4 in Walnut Creek.

The station was closed in 2013 due to recession cutbacks. Contra County Fire Protection District officials told KRON4 the move to reopen has been the works for two years.

The opening comes as peak fire season is just around the corner.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Aaron Mcalister said during a ceremony that restoration of service "marks not only where we used to be but over and beyond where we used to be."

He added that it was the right time and the right place to come back to the Walnut Creek community. Residents joined their firefighters to help push the engine into the station.

There also are plans to replace the station that was built in the 1950s.
