The November edition of the Firehouse Limited Edition Tablet App is available for download on the iPad and select Android tablets. This month's edition features a number of exclusive articles on firefighter training, technical rescue team development, leadership and more.
Ryan Pennington's "Views from the Jumpseat" article was developed after he spent some time listening to online audio scanner feeds from other communities.
"It amazed me how each department has a different way of communicating the same messages. Sometimes they message delivery varies tremendously."
In his article "Essential Radio Traffic," Pennington shares a few best practices for communications. Using videos, he illustrates a size-up using scripted phrases and shows how to communicate in the apparatus cab.
Chief Allen Baldwin's first-due series came to an end last month and in this edition he shares how fire chiefs can take the annual firefighter line-of-duty death report and turn those lessons in to training. Read "A Time to Remember and a Time to Reflect" for more.
In Part 4 of his series on developing a technical rescue team, Firehouse Technical Rescue Editor Bob Duemmel explains how members of the team are chosen and outlines their training requirements.
Duemmel writes: "Many of the applicants will be aspiring to hold rescue specialist positions as that is the place where they can get into the mix and 'break some rocks.' Those specialist positions are important, however, without the leadership to bring that process together you will never get your team off the ground."
This month's cover story was written by Firehouse Magazine Editor-in-Chief Harvey Eisner on the massive boardwalk fire in Seaside Park, N.J. The article includes dozens of photos and interviews with responders.
Other stories in the November edition include Richard Gasaway's 10 tips, with ideas on employee feedback and an apparatus showcase.
In addition to the iPad, you can download the Firehouse Limited Edition Tablet App and view it on the Samsung Galaxy Tab, Motorola Zoom and the Nexus Android. Grab your tablet and find the November edition on the iTunes store or download on Google Play.
