Boston firefighters are battling a five-alarm fire Monday morning at the Edison Building in the city’s Roxbury neighborhood.

The commercial building at 72 Warren St. was already engulfed in smoke when firefighters arrived, the department said in a social media post around 8:15 a.m. Firefighters quickly struck five alarms, drawing a bigger response to the scene.

By 8:40 a.m., fire companies surrounded the entire block, with engines pumping water to trucks equipped with ladder pipes, the department said. Firefighters were attacking the fire at the 2-story landmark building exclusively from the outside.

“All fire companies are still working hard to keep water on the building,” the department said on social media around 9:30 a.m. “Engines are pulling water from as far as Moreland St, 2 blocks away.”

Police urged drivers to seek an alternate route through the area.

City records show the property is assessed at just over $2 million and owned by a trust. It is home to multiple businesses, including an appliance sales and repair store and a sandwich shop, according to a Google Maps Street View image.
