One firefighter twisted his knee battling the fire at the church on the 4200 block of G Street, officials at the scene said. That firefighter was treated at the scene.

A sign on a gate outside the building identified the church as Iglesia Pentecostal Unida Hispana Inc. Houston Fire Department officials said the church, in a residential neighborhood, was not being used. The windows were boarded and the building had no utilities.

The fire erupted about 1:45 p.m. At one point, the fire forced emergency responders to vacate the building, officials said. Part of the church collapsed.

Arson units are investigating.
