Elderly Woman Dies in Mass. Senior Housing Fire

A fire at a senior housing complex in Haverhill Sunday morning left an 89-year-old woman dead. The fire at the Merrivista complex at 100 Water St. broke out at about 7:50 a.m. When crews arrived, firefighters said there was heavy smoke in a third floor apartment and in the hallway. Police said a woman was found unconscious in her bed and suffering from smoke inhalation. She was transported to Merrimack Valley Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police said a woman was found unconscious in her bed and suffering from smoke inhalation. She was transported to Merrimack Valley Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The womans identification was not being released pending notification of family.

Fire officials safely evacuated other residents on the third floor. They would be able to return back to their apartments once the smoke had cleared.

Haverhill police and fire were investigating the cause of the blaze.
