An Animal Protective League investigator and firefighters teamed up Wednesday to save a woman's life, but a bizarre chain of events led up to the rescue, reported NewsChannel5.
It all began when an APL investigator responded to a neighbor's complaint that there were too many dogs and cats -- possibly as many as 15 -- living inside a home on West 57th Street and Memphis.
The APL investigator knocked at the door Wednesday afternoon, and the woman turned him away. The investigator then started writing a report when he noticed smoke and flames bursting from the house.
He tried to kick his way in, and then called firefighters, who rescued the woman from the basement.
The woman was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. Most of the pets died in the fire.
Investigators believe the woman set the fire.
