HALIFAX (CP) -- Halifax police are investigating a case of arson that forced one of their officers to climb out of a third-storey townhouse window Saturday to escape the blaze.

Officers had been investigating an alleged case of drunk driving when they spotted the suspect vehicle near a home in north-end Halifax, the ATV News reported.

After arresting a suspect, police discovered the suspect was under a court order to stay away from the home.

Concerned, police then decided to check inside the residence to ensure everything was in order only to discover that a fire was burning somewhere in the house.

They made sure no one was home, but one officer realized he was trapped as flames and smoke kept him from exiting the building by the stairs.

Left with few options, the officer pulled himself out of the upstairs window and onto the roof without being hurt.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and were able to get the officer down with a ladder.

No one was injured in the blaze, but the residence was extensively damaged.

Police said one man was in custody for questioning.
