March 29--A U.S. Postal Service mail truck caught fire and was destroyed Thursday in a neighborhood southwest of the city.

But a quick-thinking mail carrier rescued all the mail before it was damaged, said Tracy Koslowski, a Drexel Heights Fire District spokeswoman. She said the carrier had just made a delivery when he saw the engine smoking.

Firefighters were sent to the vehicle fire in the 7600 block of West Illinois Street at 3 p.m. and found the truck engulfed in flames, Koslowski said.

Firefighters put the fire out, and no one was injured. The truck was a complete loss. A damage estimate was not known, Koslowski said.
