LARGO, Md. (WUSA9) -- When a Prince George's County father of two heard about a fire at his house, he immediately rushed home to check on his children. While driving home, the man crashed his car, which ended up upside down in a ditch.
But that didn't stop him.
The man then got out of his crashed car and ran half a mile to reunite with his children. Thankfully, older child heard the smoke alarm, saw a fire and quickly left the house with her sibling. Their dad was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and a medical condition possibly triggered by the running.
The fire happened around 10:45 Wednesday morning at a two-story townhouse in the 100 block of Old Enterprise Road. When firefighters arrives, there was smoke coming from the front of the house. They found the fire on the first floor. No one was trapped inside because the children had already left the house. Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire.
The family, two adults and two children, are now displaced. They will receive some temporary assistance from the County Citizen Services Unit and the American Red Cross.
After completing their work, firefighters went door-to-door checking neighboring townhomes for working smoke alarms. If no alarm was found or not working, firefighters installed one free of charge.
The cause of the fire and estimated fire loss are still under investigation.
