GULFPORT - A woman trapped inside a burning house is alive -- thanks to firefighters who entered the engulfed home Thursday afternoon and pulled her to safety.
Gulfport Fire Chief Mike Beyerstedt said his department responded about 3:42 p.m. to a structure fire at 2625 Gulf Ave and arrived to find the house, a travel trailer and two vehicles engulfed in flames.
Neighbors told the responding fire crews they believed a person was trapped inside the home.
The firefighters quickly entered the house and searched room-by-room until they found a woman trapped by the flames, Beyerstedt said.
"They found a female victim trapped in one of the rooms, and they rescued her," the chief said.
The firefighters carried the woman outside and resuscitated her until an ambulance arrived and took her to an area hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. She remained at the hospital as of about 5 p.m. Thursday.
Beyerstedt said his crews had to battle flames along with exploding ammunition to locate the woman inside the home.
After they rescued the woman, the crews spent about 30 minutes extinguishing the blaze.
Investigators later arrived on scene and are trying to determine the cause of the fire, Beyerstedt said.
