Carbon monoxide is suspected in the deaths of a family of six found dead Sunday in their Michigan home.
Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell told WTOL reporters: "The undersheriff he had already seen all six bodies and he called me on the phone and he said this is just horrific."
The Fenton Township family included two parents, Leonard and Heather, and their four children: Luke, 11, Brenden, 9, Rachel, 7, and Grant, 2.
When they returned from a movie night at their church, and discovered the power was out, Leonard told a neighbor he was going to hook up a generator, the sheriff said, adding that a receipt from a hardware store shows the father made a purchase at 10:06 p.m. on Friday.
On Sunday, a family member went into the house, and discovered the bodies in different rooms throughout the house. Leonard's body was found next to the running generator in the lower level family room, the station reported.
The mother's body found was with the 2-year-old son in the child's bedroom. while the others were found in other rooms.
Pickell said there was no carbon monoxide detector found in the home.
He added that the images of the tragedy will stay with him for a very long time.
"I got about an hour of sleep last night. I just kept seeing it," Pickell said.
