Chief Says Fire Walls Stopped N.Y. Blaze from Spreading
Source The Buffalo News, N.Y.
About a half-dozen volunteer fire companies battled a large blaze at a commercial building on Davison Road in Newstead on Thursday morning.
The site includes several buildings, and the fire is in the largest building farthest from the road, said Nancy Meyer, a neighbor who lives across the street.
The building houses an ATV repair shop, Meyer said.
Firefighters, who were called to the scene at about 6 a.m., said the building also contains snowmobiles and race cars.
No injuries have been reported.
No one was in the building at the time of the fire and a couple of propane tanks exploded at the property during the fire, said Garret Cleversley, first assistant chief for Newstead Volunteer Fire Co.
Firewalls within the structure helped stop the blaze from spreading, Cleversley said.
Water pressure has been an issue in battling the blaze, fire officials said, and two tanker trucks are standing by in case pressure is lost.
Meyer, who said she’s lived across the street for 12 years, said this is the second fire at the building.
The building sustained $500,000 in damage from a fire in March 2005. At the time, the building was said to house six businesses in 23 bays.
Presently, other buildings include auto repair, welding and cleaning supply businesses. Some are leased seasonally and include a landscaping company, Meyer said.
One business listed at the address is TAV Enterprises.
Davison Road is closed in both directions between Clarence Center and Howe roads, according to the Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition.
