Fire Hits NE Nuclear Power Plant

The Nebraska Public Power District said the public was never in danger and the plant remained operational during the incident.

Firefighters were summoned to a fire in a piping system at the Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville,

According the Journal Star, crews at the power station discovered the fire while investigating hazardous gas in the basement of the facility, according to a news release from the Nebraska Public Power District.

The fire was discovered at about 9 am and extinguished just after 9:45 a.m. according to the newspaper.

The power company said the public was never threatened by the fire and the conditions at the plant which remained stable and operational during the incident.

Staff was beefed up at the plant to monitor the area, check for damage and to make sure the fire didn’t reignite.

The newspaper reported all county, state and federal agencies were notified of the incident on Saturday afternoon.
