An ambulance thief was sentenced to between four and 12 years in prison Wednesday.

Hengi Lado, 27, said he regrets his actions but his mental health issues should have been taken into consideration, according to WWNY. 

“I would like to say that the crash could’ve easily killed someone, and I’m glad that nobody died,” he said. 

A jury convicted Lado of second-degree grand larceny for stealing the Ogdensburg Rescue Squad ambulance from the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in 2022.

He crashed the ambulance into a garage on Cedar Street in Ogdensburg and was taken into custody.

Ken Gardner, an officer with Ogdensburg Rescue Squad, said: “We’re very thankful that there was nobody else that was injured in this as it really could have been a horrible situation and could have caused some deaths with the way it was being driven. But as I said we are a nation of laws, we follow them and we have no ill will towards Mr. Lado."

Gardner said the squad has replaced the $250,000 ambulance.

Lado, who is already serving time at Mid-State Correctional Facility in connection with an unrelated matter, was ordered to reimburse the department for the cost of the rig he wrecked.
