Fire investigators in Pontiac are trying to determine the cause of a morning apartment building blaze that forced firefighters to rescue a woman in a wheelchair and resuscitate a dog trapped inside.
The fire broke out at 8:56 a.m. in a second-floor unit at the Windsong Apartments on Bynan between Joslyn and Perry, Pontiac Fire Battalion Chief Fred Joiner said.
Most residents escaped before firefighters arrived, Joiner said. But firefighters did rescue a wheelchair-bound woman and a couple sleeping, he said.
No one was injured during the incident, Joiner said. Firefighters also rescued, from the burning apartment, a 20-pound poodle/cockapoo-type dog that was unconscious and barely breathing.
"They got oxygen on him and he started breathing again," Joiner said.
The department's fire marshal was on the scene this morning trying to determine how the fire began.
