MARENGO, Iowa --

Fire crews are working to put out a fire in Marengo after it killed one person and injured a firefighter early Sunday.

At least five departments are at the scene of a large apartment fire that started at about 1:20 a.m.

A missing person has been confirmed dead.

The victim lived in an upstairs apartment, and his sister, Janice Alford, couldn't locate him after the fire.

Alford said her daughter, who also lives in the building, told her smoke and flames prevented them from reaching her brother.

"As I understand, they said they tried to get in there, but it was too hot and smoky. They couldn't get him out," Alford said.

Firefighters said no other nearby buildings were lost in the blaze.

"The flames were coming out the roof from the two front windows and through the roof when we arrived. We protected all of the other buildings and didn't lose any other buildings in town," Marengo Assistant Fire Chief Travis Schlabach said.

Schlabach said a firefighter was injured in a fall. He said the injured firefighter was taken to the hospital with at least one broken bone.
