AVERY COUNTY, N.C. --
A family grabbed what they could when their home caught fire. All they were able to get was a single box of pictures.
A mother and her young son got out of the fire in Avery County safely Tuesday. Family members spent the day trying to salvage what they could.
There was little firefighters could do to save the home. Fire chief Jack Wiseman was just down the road and was one of the first on the scene.
When I got here the smoke was going 200 feet in the air. It was completely gone when I got here, he said.
Firefighters are focusing their investigation on a propane heater. Fire marshal David Vance said the 3-year-old child accidentally stuffed something flammable in the furnace and it caught fire.
Family members and friends are trying to help. Robby Bailey is thankful his son and wife werent hurt.
The fire marshal said the Red Cross is helping the family. The fire chief also said two propane tanks exploded during the fire.
