(January 1, 2007) A firefighter suffered facial burns early today Monday while battling a two-alarm blaze in the city’s northeast.

The fire at 46 Baldwin St., less than a block north of West Main Street, was reported at 3:50 a.m. When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting out of a second-story bedroom, acting Deputy Chief Martin McMillan said.

Several firefighters went up a narrow set of stairs toward the room, and one "took a pretty good blast," McMillan said. The firefighter was being evaluated at Rochester General Hospital this morning.

After that, firefighters pulled out of the 2½ story house and fought it from the exterior, using a deluge gun, McMillan said. The fire was declared under control at 4:28 a.m.

The cause is under investigation.

No one was home at the time of the fire, McMillan said.
