One Dead California Care Facility Blaze

Dec. 1, 2006
Firefighters quickly asked for a second alarm when they realized it was a care facility with many residents.
A smoky early morning two-alarm fire Friday at an adult board-and-care facility in San Jose claimed one life and sent 14 other frightened residents out into the frigid temperatures. Battalion Chief Kevin Conant said the blaze was reported at 6:35 a.m. at the two-story structure on Santee Drive that was home to 15 residents and caretakers. "Once we found out it was a board and care facility, we upgraded it to a two-alarm fire," Conant said. "Unfortunately, we had a fatality on the upper floor near the point of origin." Conant had no further details on the victim. Ambulances were called to the scene to help the evacuated residents stay warm. "We're putting them ambulances where they can stay warm," Conant said. "It's 39 degrees right now." The blaze was quickly extinguished. Investigators from the fire and police departments were on the scene to determine the cause of the blaze and if a crime may have been committed.
