District officials say the early Monday morning fire at Eastern Market is more than just a local tragedy. They also say they'll work together to see that the market is rebuilt and that displaced vendors are able to return.
D.C. Councilman Tommy Wells who represents the Sixth District that includes the Capitol Hill neighborhood says the market was the heart and soul of the community. He says vendors may be able to set up operations in tents while the damaged buildings are repaired.
D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty toured the damaged market this morning. He says the 144-year-old market building that was most seriously damaged was a unique landmark used by both residents and visitors to the city.
Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton says weekend visits to the market were part of her normal routine. She says she'll work to convince members of Congress that restoring the market is more than just a local issue.
