Train traffic resumed early Tuesday ahead of schedule on the first track of a rebuilt trestle near Cal Expo in Sacramento, a Union Pacific spokesman said.
The move followed a marathon effort to replace an important wooden trestle that burned at the same location on March 15.
Railroad spokesman Mark Davis said the first train passed over the new concrete and steel trestle at about 1:50 a.m.
The first track was earlier expected to be ready for trains on March 30.
Crews still have to finish work on a second track on the trestle.
The trestle is part of a key route for passenger and freight rail traffic linking the Bay Area to elsewhere in the nation.
Trains had to be detoured while the trestle was being rebuilt.
