A Fire Forced About 165 Tenants from a Nampa Retirement Home

March 13, 2005
NAMPA, Idaho (AP) -- About 165 tenants of a Nampa retirement home were evacuated after a fire broke out.

Fire investigators say a 95-year-old woman warned residents the SunBridge Retirement and Rehabilitation home after a fire erupted in her room just before midnight Friday.

Nampa Deputy Fire Chief Doug Strosnider said the blaze started quickly.

''All of a sudden, she saw a burst of flames,'' Strosnider said. ''She got up, grabbed her walker and pushed herself out.''

Investigators say the fire was caused by exposed electrical wiring from the cord of an old lamp that could not handle its 200-watt bulb.

Nampa city officials recently adopted a fire code that calls for sprinklers in three- and four-plex residences like SunBridge. And fire officials say the advanced system kept the fire under control until crews arrived.

No one was hurt in the fire.
